OUMA BAKERY

Maricia du Plessis owner of Polly’s cafe in Brooklyn needed a logo for her new Bakery and all day cafe, Ouma located in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Ouma stands for grandmother in Afrikaans paying homage to Maricia’s home country, South Africa.

The cafe is inspired by the the warmth of a grandmother’s kitchen. Inviting people to linger and gather with others. Ouma should feel like a comforting pause in the day, a place where guests can slow down, savor, and feel at home.

The wheat icon is a unifying symbol. An ingredient used in many dishes and cuisines and instrumental in the delicious, homemade pastries Ouma bakes daily.

I used a scipt font for the logo to create an inviting and casual feel. Not focusing on perfection, to mimic the cursive handwriting of grandmothers.
